How to grow

From seed to harvest in four simple steps

1

Prepare the soil

Loosen well-drained soil and mix in a handful of compost or organic manure. Smooth the bed and remove any large clods.

2

Sow the seeds

Plant the seeds about 1 cm deep, spaced evenly. Lightly cover with soil — no need to bury too deep.

3

Water gently

Water with a fine spray immediately. Keep the soil consistently moist (not soaked) until the seedlings emerge.

4

Watch them grow

In 7–14 days you'll see the first sprouts. Thin out crowded seedlings and feed lightly every 2–3 weeks.

About Cowpea Nidhi Harita Premium Pack Seeds

Cowpea, known as Lobia or Chawli across India, is a nutritious and fast-growing legume that thrives in Indian heat. The Nidhi Harita Premium Pack is a high-yielding climbing variety that produces long, tender pods perfect for sabzi, stir fries and curries. It grows vigorously on a trellis and is an excellent choice for terraces and large balconies.

Health Benefits of Cowpea

  • High in Plant Protein: One of the best vegetarian sources of protein, supporting muscle health and energy.
  • Rich in Iron: Helps prevent anaemia and supports healthy blood production.
  • Excellent Source of Fibre: Promotes healthy digestion and keeps you feeling full longer.
  • Low Glycaemic Index: Slow-digesting carbohydrates help maintain stable blood sugar levels.

How to Grow Cowpea at Home

Sow seeds 1 inch deep in well-drained soil or cocopeat mix. Set up a trellis before sowing as plants climb quickly. Space 30 cm apart and water every 2-3 days. Ensure 6+ hours of direct sunlight daily. Pods are ready to harvest in 50-60 days from sowing.

When to Sow Cowpea Seeds

Cowpea is a warm-season crop that grows best in summer and monsoon. Best sowing windows in India are February to April and June to July. Avoid sowing in winter as cold temperatures significantly slow growth and yield.
